Gardiner Andrus Armstrong Deane was born 23 June 1840 in Norfolk County, Mass. He served in the Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and inspector-general of the department stationed at Little Rock. At the conclusion of the war, he went into the mercantile business until 1867 when he became chief clerk of the land department of the Union Pacific Railroad (Central Branch). Buford was the son of John and Nancy Hickman Buford. He was born in Woodford County, Kentucky on his family's plantation, "Rose Hill." At the time of his birth his namesake, Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of the French, was at the height of his power. Buford graduated from West Point in 1827 and served for eight years in the artillery and in 1835 resigned from the service to become an engineer.
